Oannao Bluetooth Bone Conduction Headphones Review

Oannao Bluetooth Bone Conduction Headphones Review

Oanno is a trademark of Shenzhen ShiJia Technology Co., Ltd, which manufactures earphones and headphones alongside other electronic equipment like smart glasses, sonars, smartwatches, and portable media players.

As with many of its competitors on the market, the Oannao Bone Conduction Headphones have been designed to be compatible with athletic use. Apart from runners and cyclists, drivers can also benefit from its open-ear design. The wireless Bluetooth connectivity and mic allow you to listen to music or answer the phone as you drive, without compromising your ability to remain alert to your surroundings (and thus reducing the risk of an accident).

If you are not familiar with bone conduction technology, you can be assured that this futuristic-seeming technology is fairly simple (and not technically a recent invention). Bone conduction headphones transmit sound vibrations through your cheekbones and jaw, instead of reaching your eardrums via air vibrations through your ear canals. Both forms of sound transmission nevertheless arrive at your brain’s auditory center through the auditory nerve.

Bone conduction headphones benefit individuals who suffer from hearing impairments (18th-century deaf composer Beethoven is probably the most famous person who has benefited from this technology). Individuals who suffer from intense unease or discomfort when using regular earphones or headphones have also taken to them. They are also used by athletes, fitness enthusiasts, call center employees, office workers, military personnel, and professional police officers.

Like many other bone conduction headphones, Oannao claims that its products help protect against hearing decline. Its claims about avoiding ear sweat and bacteria growth in the ears are true, but you should note that bone conduction headphones do not automatically protect you against cochlear damage or hearing damage vis-à-vis regular headphones.

Like their counterparts, the sound waves they transmit will be transduced by your cochlea. As such, they do not prevent the risk of cochlear damage with prolonged use. They may prevent hearing drum damage to a greater extent than regular headphones, but only when they are used to listen to an MP3 player that has a sound output that exceeds 100 decibels. This is the upper limit which has proposed by the European Union Consumer Affairs Commissioner.

The headphones have a recognizable neckband design, which goes behind the lower back of your head. It features two pads that are placed directly in front of your ears (but not inside them). You can use the removable elastic strap to get a tighter or looser fit, depending on how you plan to use them. As previously mentioned, they work best if your head is between 48 to 60 cm (18.9 – 23.62 inches) in circumference.

You have access to four control buttons. This includes a multifunction button that you use to play, pause, answer calls, and end calls. You have a separate power button to turn the headphones on or off, and volume control buttons to increase or decrease the volume. The micro USB charging port lies to the right of the power button.

With its Bluetooth 4.0 technology, you can access music or calls via your phone as long as it lies within a 15 feet range.

Sound quality

The Oannao Bone Conduction Headphones provide satisfactory sound quality. Its mic comes with noise-canceling technology and is fairly outstanding; you can thus expect clear voice calls unless you are using the headphones in a particularly noisy environment or in conditions where there are strong winds.

On the whole, however, you can expect a fairly underwhelming music listening experience here (as with most bone conduction headphones). Using the earplugs will improve the intensity of the bass, but only marginally so.

Final Thoughts

The Oannao Bone Conduction Headphones may not possess many outstanding features, but it provides good functionality at a relatively affordable price. As long as your head circumference fits into the aforementioned dimensions, you will be able to enjoy the benefits of listening to music or making calls while retaining your situational awareness. The specific sizing and lightweight material (plastic) also ensure your comfort over long hours of use.

As with most bone conduction headphones, you can expect to hear a dull bass when listening to music. Otherwise, its sound quality is satisfactory. It performs better when making calls, as the mic comes with useful noise-canceling technology. It can filter out most unwanted background noise unless you are in an exceptionally windy location or a raucous environment.
