JBL Flip 4 vs Flip 5 vs Flip 6: Which Should You Buy?

JBL Flip 4 vs Flip 5 vs Flip 6: Which Should You Buy?

For most new buyers choosing between JBL Flip 4, Flip 5 and Flip 6, the Flip 6 is our first shortlist choice when its price is close to the Flip 5. It combines a separate woofer and tweeter, IP67 protection and PartyBoost. The Flip 5 makes sense at a meaningful discount, while a working Flip 4 may be worth keeping for Connect+ compatibility and its speakerphone. Also compare the newer Flip 7 before buying.

Two-way does not mean stereo. A woofer handles lower frequencies and a tweeter handles higher ones. That driver arrangement alone does not establish separate left and right channels. For a wider stereo setup using Flip 6, compare two matching Flip 6 speakers rather than treating one unit’s two drivers as a stereo pair.

Sound: what changed between generations?

Flip 4: two drivers and older connection features

JBL’s Flip 4 specification describes a stereo speaker with two drivers. That is a different arrangement from the later Flip 5 and the two-way Flip 6. The small physical distance between drivers still matters if you are expecting a broad left/right listening image.

For an owner, the decision should start with what the current speaker fails to do. If it still covers your normal listening area, replacing it purely for a larger model number may solve little. Its AUX connection, call functionality and Connect+ support can be more useful than chasing a headline power figure.

Flip 5: a single racetrack driver

The Flip 5 changes to a single racetrack driver and a 20W rating. It is a practical alternative when the price is substantially lower than Flip 6 and you do not need the later model’s separate tweeter or dust rating.

A power rating is not a direct loudness scale. You cannot reliably turn the difference in watts into a percentage increase in usable volume or bass. Compare what you hear at a normal listening level if you have the opportunity, rather than assuming all newer specifications are audible upgrades.

Flip 6: a woofer and dedicated tweeter

The Flip 6 splits the work across a woofer and a separate tweeter. That is the main design reason to shortlist it over Flip 5 when the purchase prices are similar. JBL also documents app sound controls, making it worth checking the available EQ settings with your usual music.

We have not measured frequency response, distortion or maximum volume across these three speakers. Our recommendation rests on the verified features and buying trade-offs, rather than invented sound scores. If you need more coverage for a large outdoor gathering, compare a larger category instead of expecting a small Flip to cover every situation.

Pairing compatibility: Connect+, PartyBoost and Auracast

This is the most important check if you already own a JBL speaker. The same brand and a Bluetooth connection do not guarantee that two speakers can play together through JBL’s linking feature.

Flip 5 + Flip 5YesYes, via the supported PartyBoost setup
Flip 6 + Flip 6YesYes, via the supported PartyBoost setup
Flip 6 + Flip 7Not a standard PartyBoost/Auracast groupDo not buy on this assumption

JBL’s support guide explicitly states that PartyBoost Stereo Mode requires two of the same model. Party Mode is different: it lets compatible speakers play the same music without assigning a mixed-model pair as left and right. If you already own a Flip 5 and want another speaker, that distinction can change the best-value purchase.

How to set up a matching PartyBoost pair

  • Turn on both speakers and connect the phone to one of them.
  • Start music on the connected speaker.
  • Open JBL Portable, let it detect that speaker, then use the PartyBoost buttons on both units.
  • After the app detects the pair, choose Party or Stereo as appropriate. Stereo requires two matching models.
  • If connection fails, confirm the linking system and model names before treating it as a Bluetooth fault.

MegaSafetyFirst’s independent walkthrough demonstrates PartyBoost on Flip 6. The written JBL support instructions linked below remain the reference for compatibility.

Battery and charging: the newer model does not double runtime

The headline battery claim is up to 12 hours for all three models. That means the Flip 6 is not a battery upgrade on the strength of the published maximum alone. The more convenient change from Flip 4 is moving from Micro-USB to USB-C on Flip 5 and Flip 6.

Actual runtime depends on the level and content you play. With an older Flip 4, battery condition is also relevant: the remaining capacity of a used unit cannot be inferred from its original specification. If you buy an older or renewed speaker, test whether it covers your normal listening session while the return terms still apply.

USB-C is a connector type, not a universal promise of digital audio input. Do not buy a Flip 5 or Flip 6 expecting its charging port to work like the Flip 7’s documented USB-C audio feature.

IPX7 vs IP67: what matters outdoors

Flip 4 and Flip 5 carry IPX7, while Flip 6 carries IP67. The important added rating on Flip 6 is dust protection. Do not read the X in IPX7 as a tested dust rating, or assume that the change means every form of liquid exposure is harmless.

Before charging after a wet trip, follow the specific model’s care instructions and check that the connector is dry. On a used speaker, inspect the charging area, housing and any port cover rather than treating an old IP label as proof of its current seal condition.

What about Flip 4 listings?

We are keeping Flip 4 in the comparison because existing owners need its AUX, speakerphone and Connect+ differences explained. The product searches used for this update did not return a clear exact-model Flip 4 offer suitable for our recommendation. We have therefore not substituted a Clip 4 or an unrelated product link.

If you source a Flip 4 elsewhere, compare condition, battery health, included charging cable and return arrangements. It can make sense for an existing Connect+ system, but buying old stock at a near-newer-model price needs a specific reason.

Should you buy Flip 7 instead?

JBL Flip 7 portable speaker in black

Flip 7 deserves a price check before you buy a Flip 6. Its documented features include Auracast, IP68 protection, USB-C audio and a normal-playback claim of up to 14 hours. The advertised 16-hour maximum includes an additional two hours with Playtime Boost.

The compatibility trade-off matters: Flip 7 is not a straightforward add-on for a PartyBoost collection. For an existing Flip 5 or Flip 6 owner, keeping the linking system may be more useful than moving to the newer model. For a first-time buyer, its current offer may change which generation represents better value.

Upgrade or keep your current speaker?

  • Own a Flip 4? Keep it if AUX, speakerphone or Connect+ still matters. Upgrade for a clearly identified need, not just a newer Bluetooth version.
  • Own a Flip 5? Compare the cost of a Flip 6 against the benefit you want. If stereo is the goal, a second Flip 5 solves a different task from a mixed pair.
  • Own a Flip 6? Keep it if its performance and PartyBoost setup work for you. Flip 7 features are reasons to compare, not an automatic reason to replace it.
  • Buying from scratch? Check Flip 6 and Flip 7 current totals first; use Flip 5’s discount as the value comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better: JBL Flip 4, Flip 5 or Flip 6?

Flip 6 is our first shortlist among these three for a new buyer when prices are close. Flip 5 can be a better-value discount choice, while Flip 4 retains features and Connect+ compatibility that an owner may want to keep.

Can Flip 5 and Flip 6 connect together?

Yes, through PartyBoost Party Mode. JBL says that combination cannot provide Stereo Mode; you need two speakers of the same model for left/right stereo.

Can Flip 4 pair with Flip 5 or Flip 6?

Not through their built-in JBL speaker-linking systems. Flip 4 uses Connect+, while Flip 5 and Flip 6 use PartyBoost. The systems are not backward-compatible.

Does one Flip 6 play stereo because it has two drivers?

A woofer and tweeter form a two-way speaker, not proof of separated left/right stereo. Use a supported matching pair if that is the listening arrangement you want.

Which Flip has an AUX input and microphone?

Flip 4 retains those legacy features. Flip 5 and Flip 6 are not suitable substitutes if AUX playback or a built-in speakerphone is essential.

Does Flip 6 last longer than Flip 5?

Both carry an up-to-12-hour manufacturer claim. We have not tested them head to head, and real runtime depends on use and battery condition.

Is the Flip 6 waterproof and dustproof?

Its documented rating is IP67. Follow its care and charging instructions; a rating does not mean charging while wet or every liquid exposure is acceptable.

Is Flip 7 compatible with Flip 6 PartyBoost?

They use different systems: Auracast on Flip 7 and PartyBoost on Flip 6. Do not buy them as a standard JBL linked pair.

Our recommendation

Choose around the system you need. For a new purchase among Flip 4, 5 and 6, compare Flip 6 first. Choose Flip 5 for a worthwhile saving, and keep a suitable Flip 4 when its older connections still solve your needs. Before checkout, compare the newer Flip 7 and confirm whether your existing speakers need PartyBoost or Auracast.
