Hot Wheels Racing Goes Mainstream
Most collector’s are used to attending their local die-cast club meetings each month to come together with their fellow collectors and typically race cars. On those very same nights each month, others might attend their local drinking establishment to throw back a few pints. However, instead of playing pool, tossing darts or playing a few rounds of Keno, pub-patrons are now bringing die-cast to the watering hole!
A recent article in the Omaha World Herald featured a story about a new Hot Wheels Racing League that has become wildly popular in a bar called The Waiting Room in Benson, Omaha. On the night the reporter attended, upwards of 40 people ranging from age 20 to 50 were present to participate in the pub’s official racing league that runs for a 6 week season.
Its great to see die-cast racing’s popularity spread outside the confines of the traditional hobby club. In a time when collecting is in such a state of flux, the hobby can use all the help it can get, and these types of mainstream gatherings will only help keep the passion for die-cast alive. Very cool! Glad to see HW derbies getting some “mainstream” exposure. I built my own derby track this past summer and have had fun racing with buds. Even got into a bit of modding for racing.
Derby-ing is something everyone can enjoy. Easy. Cheap. Fun!
I just found this site and love it! Glad to see a well organized (and well designed) home for HW guys like me! Cheers.
Don’t want to shamelessly plug, but I have a community site dedicated more to racing diecast than just collecting. As I like to say, “we collect to play” – hope you can join and share your racing stories and thoughts.

Morning Toast,
Thanks for commenting – especially with the kudos! I added your site to my Diecast Sites page last week after finding you on Twitter.
Cheers!

Me and my Auto Tech Class are having to build a Hot Wheels Racing Track and I was wondering what would be the best material to use In this Project of ours Our School name Is Dobyns Bennet High School Located In Kingsport, Tennessee
Anthony,
Most tracks are made out of wood and are built in sections that can be assembled into the final (looong) track. The best way to handle the plastic track is to create the lanes from wood that are every so slightly wider than the plastic track. Then you can press the plastic track into the lane which gets held in place by friction. Avoid using screws to hold the track in place.
Best, Jeff
